Join the Board

Volunteer for the NBCSN Board

The NBCSN Board is comprised of nine (9) volunteer members. Eight board members must be active NCSNs, current members of the National Association of School Nurses, and actively employed in school-health related services at the time of their election. A public consumer with no relationship to any NBCSN past or present Board member is also elected to serve as a voting member.

Duties and Commitment

Duties of volunteer Board members include:

  • Prepare for, attend, and actively participate in board meetings.
  • Collaborate with others and complete assigned activities in a timely manner.
  • Establish goals, objectives, programs, and certification procedures to accomplish the mission of the NBCSN.
  • Monitor and evaluate programs and certification procedures designed to implement the established goals and objectives.
  • Provide leadership on the Board as an officer, committee chair, or both.

Appointment to the NBCSN Board requires a three-year commitment for a member’s first term. There is a one-time optional reappointment for an additional three-year term.

In addition to the nine volunteer members, a member of the NASN Executive Committee, who is an active NCSN, is appointed by the NASN President. This non-voting member acts as a liaison between the NASN Board and the NBCSN Board.

Board Meetings

The Board meets twice per year (usually in June and late fall) for two to four days to conduct its business. Board members are also assigned on a rotational basis to attend other meetings (e.g., test development activities and conferences of the American Board of Nursing Specialties). Outside of these face-to-face meetings, board meetings are held monthly via video call. Board members may work on special projects, prepare for meetings, or have emergency vote meetings at other times. All in all, on average, throughout the year, most board members spend about two (3) hours per week on board activities.
